Kenny Whiten is son of Bea and Whitey Whiten.    Kenny has moved from Atlanta, Ga. to the Villas here in GlenLakes.  He is the owner of Coastal Services that deals with computer problems and web site creations. I have noticed that several of us are not that “Computer Savvy” from the questions I have been getting about computers. Anytime I have someone ask me I say “See Kenny”.     Kenny is the “Glenlakes Computer Man” and has offered to help with computer tips for this site.

Some free options

Most of the time I am not too supportive regarding “FREE” offers. There are exceptions to every rule. Through my own personal experiences and with the help of many customers here are a few examples of some free offers I can feel very comfortable recommending.

  • Spamfighter – Works in concert with Outlook and Outlook Express and filters most of the spam that Gulftel customers get flooded with.
  • AVG – A free antivirus program that is simple to administer, uses less resources than Norton, McAfee or TrendMicro.
  • Gmail – Google’s Version of free web based email with tons of features.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy – Run once a week, it will delete most spyware and also has many other great features in advanced mode.
  • Adobe Reader 8.0 – Many sites and emails include files with the .pdf extension. This free program allows you to read those files.
  • Microsoft offers viewers for PowerPoint, Excel and a few other programs if you have no need to purchase the entire Office Suite. Search Microsoft for these viewers.
  • Be careful of free offers. Ask me or others about a program before downloading or installing it.
  • Thanks to everyone for the business and referrals and please call me with any questions.

If you would like a sample schedule of recommended weekly maintenance tasks to perform on your system to keep it performing at top speed call 943-3670 or drop me an email.

Have a great week and hit ‘em straight!!

    Email spam

Many of my customers, most of whom are Gulftel customers just like me have been noticing the recent increase in junk and spam email. For Gulftel’s part I think they have dropped the ball as far as having some server-side help. There are a few things that can be done on your end to decrease the amount that gets through. Software has always mostly blocked these scumbags and their trashy phishing emails before but they are smart. They simply embedded text in the email body now and created a new problem. It’s easy to change an image attribute so they can create and endless amount of what the software filters think is new material. In time they will solve this, at our expense because image editing will only get more difficult.

    • The easiest way is to go to Office Depot and buy a $30 to $50 program although I’m not a fan of those for too many reasons to mention. My main problem is that although they work well when configured correctly that same configuration is what gives the average user nightmares.
    • Learn how to build and maintain filters based on the content or subject line entries.
    • Try the Mozilla software package. It’s free and is easy to migrate to. Using the import wizards in less than an hour you should be surfing and emailing at lightning speed without the spam.  Heres the link: Mozilla

    Email options

For many of you that travel a good bit or only live in this area for half the year, email addresses can be a real pain. I have seen that many of you don’t keep an account with Gulftel all year so therefore you obviously cant take your Gulftel email address back home an use it. An easy remedy for this is to use a web-based email account that is accessible from anywhere where there is access the web. They are safe and widely used and are free. Examples of sites that offer this are Yahoo, Google and Hotmail. For many this is easier than changing emails several times per year and having to notify all your contacts when you change. All of them let you import your address book where it is available online as well. As an added bonus with these free services the SPAM protection is much more effective than Gulftel.
