What does it take to have a USGA Handicap?

While the USGA develops the formula used in tabulating handicaps, it does not issue them directly to individual golfers.   A USGA Handicap Index is issued through licensed golf clubs that follow all the procedures of the established USGA Handicap System.  The USGA definition of a golf club can be found at he USGA website under the “Definition of a Golf Club.”Is Glenlakes GC “compliant” with the USGA?                                                                     Glenlakes GC does meet compliance standards as to how the USGA defines what a “Golf Club” should be. (See section 2 of the USGA handicap System.)

Below is the 17 point “Club Compliance Checklist” as designated by the USGA

#

Checklist

Glenlakes

1.

Meet the USGA definition of a golf club as defined?

Yes

2

Have a Handicap Committee composed of mostly members and chaired by a member? (Section 8-1 of USGA Handicap System)

Yes

3

Make it possible for players to record the correct USGA Course Rating and USGA Slope Rating with each posted score from every set of tees?                     (Sections 5-2 and 8-2b and c.)

Yes

4

Require the posting of all scores made at home and away? (Section 5-1)

Yes

5

Require use of USGA procedures to adjust hold scores before posting?     (Section 4)

Yes

6

Require that nine-hole scores be combined and posted for handicap purposes? (Section 5-2c and d.)

Yes

7

Insist that the principles of The Rules of Golf be followed?  (Section 5-1)

Yes

8

Follow the revision schedule and posting season of the authorized golf association having jurisdiction on the region? (Section 8-3a and c.)

Yes

9

Ensure that all acceptable scores are entered correctly? (Section 5-2)

Yes

10

Perform computations and adjustments in accordance with he USGA Handicap Formula?  (Sections 8-4 and 10)

Yes

11

Make current scoring records and Handicap Index listing of all members readily available for inspection by others?  (Section 6-3)

Yes

12

Reduce or increase the Handicap Index of any player whose handicap does not reflect the player’s potential ability? (Section 8-4)

Yes

13

Notify an authorized golf association when permanent changes have been made to the golf course so that the association can issue a new USGA Course Rating and USGA Slope Rating? (Section 14-5b)

Yes

14

Include the letter “L” after local handicaps which exceed the USGA maximum limits of 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women?  (Section 3-4)

Yes

15

Utilize the current USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating issued by an authorized golf association?  (Section 14)

Yes

16

Participation by a representative from the golf club in a USGA Handicap Seminar (whether conducted by and USGA or an authorized golf association) including passing a test exhibiting knowledge about the system?

Yes

17

Have a signed license agreement in place with a local authorized golf association or the USGA prior to issuing a USGA Handicap Index to it’s members?

Yes

If the answer to all questions is “yes,” the golf club is following the USGA Handicap System, and may issue USGA Handicap Indexes to it’s members.

Having a USGA Handicap and being on the USGA “GHIN” System are two, separate issues  The only benefit to being on the “GHIN” system is that individuals needing to verify handicaps can do so by accessing the GHIN system with the proper ID and GHIN number at any time of day. * We have the same capability by sharing the link to the LGA/MGA website and clicking on “Handicaps”.   We perform all of the handicap functions right here, rather than send off the information to be processed.   So, if you are wanting to compete in an event requiring an established USGA Handicap, you do have one... AND the event committee can verify by accessing the aforementioned website.

If the event still requires a  “GHIN”  handicap to be used,    we can’t do anything about it.

*I bolded and put in red the above on my own.  The whole paragraph was bold except giving credit for having access to the Handicaps on the LGA/MGA Web-site....must have been a mistake.
